Transition Year Coaching Programme
A Gaelic Football coaching course took place for students of Transition year over two days in October in An Sportlann, Castlebar . The course was organised and run by Mr. McGarry, Eugene Lavin and Billy McNicholas. The two day course focused on teaching students both the skills of the game and how to treat injuries which may be incurred while playing the game. The first day began with an introduction to basic Physiotherapy and a look at the contents of a typical Physio’s bag. By day two of the course students were learning some of the more complicated skills and drills of the game.
The day ended with students being put into teams of 5-6 and teaching each other how to improve their skills. All students agreed that this was an interesting, useful and above all, highly enjoyable course. A group of students will visit the local Primary Schools to coach 5th and 6th classes using their newly acquired coaching skills. Following this a group of 15 TY students took part in a camogie coaching course. The skills learned at this course will be put into use to develop camogie with junior students in Davitt College and local Primary schools.
