DAVITT COLLEGE, CASTLEBAR AWARDED THE GREEN FLAG


For the school year 2010/2011 transition year students at Davitt College, Castlebar have been working on the green schools programme as part of the transition year social studies module. Students council members also became involved in the programme where students set up a green schools committee, carried out an environmental review, focused on recycling and launched an anti-litter campaign both inside and outside the school campus.

A huge team effort was involved and the green schools programme was co-ordinated by Ms. Martina Kelly, science teacher. In January of this year the students' campaign was given a major boost when an Taisce carried out a litter survey in Castlebar town and Davitt College was named as one of only five areas which achieved grade A standard. In April Davitt College was awarded the green flag by an Taisce in the 2011 green schools awards ceremony in the McWilliam Hotel, Claremorris, Co. Mayo.

An Taoiseach, Mr. Enda kenny, T.D., was guest of honour at Davitt College, Castlebar, on friday 3rd june 2011, when he raised the green flag on the school campus. He was highly complementary of the students on the green schools committee and their co-ordinator, Ms. Martina Kelly, for all their hard work and their positive influence on the community.
