JUNIOR CERTIFICATE – 3 YEAR COURSE

Davitt College offers a wide range of academic and practical subjects at Junior Cycle. Since the introduction of the three-year Junior Certificate, Gaelige, English, and Mathematics may be taken at three levels – Higher, Ordinary or Foundation. All other subjects are offered at Higher or Ordinary level. The Department of Education allows students to repeat a year in special circumstances
Because of our school size and our excellent pupil-teacher ratio, we are able to cater for students with varying levels of ability and to place them in classes best suited to their needs and capabilities. Our present pupil/teacher ratio at Junior Cycle, is a most favourable 24:1.
We consider it unfair and unwise that students, entering secondary schools, have to choose subjects which they have not experienced beforehand.
To alleviate this problem, our First Year Students will not have to make a final choice of subjects until the end of the year. This will allow them to sample a wide range of subjects during First Year. It is vitally important that their choice of subjects reflect their ability and aptitude, as ill-advised choices may harm their future education and career prospects. Professional advice will be offered to parents and students at the end of the year. Subjects are offered at Higher and Ordinary Level where appropriate.
