Davitt College Group takes on Kilimanjaro Challenge!

A group of 13 students, 3 Parents and 4 Staff from Davitt College are currently fundraising for an historic opportunity to climb Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro. This amazing adventure will be a first for the Castlebar College, and while partaking in an amazing once in a lifetime experience the group will raise some much needed funds for local Mayo Charities.
Irishman Ian McKeever, who is world record holder for the 7-Summit challenge will be group leader for the project and will oversee the preparation for all the students involved so they are physically capable of the climb. Ms. Andrea Silke of Davitt College who is co-ordinating the project within the school is delighted with the enthusiasm of all concerned. “We are all aware that this is no Sunday walk and that there are hazards” she says “but it is the kind of opportunity that comes up once in a lifetime and very seldom while one is still in school and the students know that.” But Ms. Silke readily admits that the student excitement is infectious and that the staff and parents are “on a high as well.”
As part of his involvement Ian McKeever requires that the students use the opportunity to raise money for local charities and the group has chosen to assist Western Care, Mayo Autism Action, Mayo Roscommon Hospice and Cystic Fibrosis.
Various fundraisers are currently being organised in order to raise a substantial amount for the charities involved, not to mention training and preparation for the 7 day climb! This trip will take place during August 2011, and so the group will be fundraising between now and then. All help and support will be greatly appreciated not only by the climbers but by the charities too.
