New Room facilities and Sports Hall for Davitt College.
The twenty five year long saga of the Davitt College Sports Hall has finally reached its finale. In what has been described by school Principal Ms. Bernie Rowland as “a triumph of persistence over resistance,” the new facility will get its first airing on December 6th. when it will host the launch of the Mayo Sports Partnership blueprint for the development of sport / physical activity in County Mayo, by Mr. John Treacy, C.E.O. Irish Sports Council, and Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Councillor Michael Burke.
The new hall, which will be known as the Joe Langan Sports Hall, is the result of a campaign that was pursued relentlessly by generations of Davitt College staff, students and parents. Spearheaded through the years by three consecutive C.E.O.s, and four Principals, the project is now complete and will be officially opened in the New Year to the great joy and relief of all who were involved through the years.
Three other major developments at the Castlebar school will greatly
improve facilities for a staff and student population that has expanded dramatically in recent years. A new, fully resourced Special Educational Needs Department as well as wheel chair accessible toilets and changing rooms have been brought into use. New Woodwork/Construction, Home Economics and Technical Graphics rooms, as well as additional office space will this week be completed by Michael Dwane Contractors and a €30,000 grant for further I.C.T. development in the college has been recently announced.
