TRANSITION YEAR

Recognition that the world and the workplace are changing rapidly, together with the fact that students are leaving second level education at too young an age resulted in the development of a Transition Year Programme in Davitt College. The programme has been running successfully for a number of years, as is evident by the number of students opting for this extra year.
We have devised our own programme in conjunction with Department of Education guidelines. Inspectors visit the school regularly to inspect and monitor our syllabus. Transition year is recognised as the first of a three-year Senior Cycle.

The key aims of the programme are:

  • Education for maturity with the emphasis on personal development including social awareness and competence.
  • The acquiring of General, Technical and Academics skills including
  • Communication and enterprise skills.
  • Education through experience of adult and working life.

The emphasis in Transition Year is on the development of skills which we believe will benefit the pupils in Leaving Certificate, Third Level Studies, and in working life. We attempt to develop self-confidence, study skills, information seeking skills, ability to work in groups, entrepreneurial and leisure skills to name but a few. Emphasis is also placed on self-regulated learning where students take greater responsibility for their own learning and decision-making.
The curriculum includes a wide variety of subject and study areas which could not be included in a Leaving Certificate programme. It gives students the opportunity to taste many different subject areas, which, in conjunction with a career guidance programme, is of great benefit when choosing their Leaving Certificate subjects.
