DAVITT COLLEGE STUDENTS VISIT THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT IN STRASBOURG

On February 23rd 2010 a select group of twenty five students from Davitt College will take part in the Euroscola programme at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France.

The Euroscola is a European Parliament programme that gives secondary school students the opportunity to discuss their expectations and ideas on the progress of European integration.

Davitt College students will share this special day with groups of students from 18 E.U. member states, including Greece, Portugal, Italy, Slovenia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium and Cyprus. They earned the privilege of representing Ireland through their participation in European Studies, which is part of the Transition Year module in Davitt College.

The students will be accompanied by three teachers from Davitt College.

The group will arrive at the Louis Weiss Parliament building at 8.30am on February 23rd next. After breakfast they will be divided into six mulitlingual working groups and each group will consider one relevant topic, such as '2010 European Year for combating poverty and social exclusion', 'Environment, climate change and energy', 'The Future of Europe'.
Throughout the day students will get the opportunity to sit in MEP's seats in the massive hemispherical Chamber of the impressive building, to ask questions and debate on the development of Europe, to meet students from other E.U. countries and to gain an insight into the running of the E.U. and the workings of the European Parliament.

The trip to Strasbourg will be extremely beneficial for all of the students involved. They will return to Castlebar with a greater understanding of the European Union, and the positive results of meeting and working with students from other countries.
